The built environment must be understood as much more than a collection of buildings. It represents the framework for human activity and includes buildings (residential, commercial, industrial, specialized), public spaces, parks and other facilities, historical buildings and monuments, streets and sidewalks, building and road infrastructure, as well as any other type of infrastructure necessary for the general needs of society. The built environment - broadly defined as such - has a direct impact on the natural environment and climate change, at the same time representing an essential factor for the quality of life.
